The first thing to do is get an attorney. This is assuming that you have someone that is willing to let you adopt their child. If not, then you will have to contact an agency and work through them. In some cases your personal physician can offer some advice on the subject. It is somewhat involved and does include home and lifestyle type inspections along with background investigation through friends, employers, etc.. It is no problem as long as things are as they should be between you and your partner and your background is sound.Has anyone ever adopted a child? if so how can my husband and i get started in the process? also any advice?

Here's the advice: Do NOT adopt a child from a foreign country. Most have developmental problems and other language problems.
The David Thomas foundation is a good place to start. We are going through them right now.
